Case Study

Private Dedicated Infrastructure for Community Empowerment

Introduction: In response to the growing demand for robust internet infrastructure, particularly in underserved rural areas, a groundbreaking initiative was undertaken to establish a private dedicated infrastructure network. This network aimed to provide 100G IP connectivity, primarily targeting anchor institutions such as K-12 schools and community colleges, while also laying the groundwork for at-home internet access.

Key Components:

  1. Extensive Fiber Network: Over 320 miles of fiber construction were required to establish a continuous fiber network connecting 32 initial participating K-12 entities. This involved significant underground construction and traversing mountainous terrain.

  2. Utility Partnerships: Collaborations with utility companies were crucial for extending services to remote areas, involving coordination across multiple authorities and agencies to resolve permit actions.

  3. Scalable Infrastructure: The core of the network boasted secure DIA (Dedicated Internet Access) capabilities at 100G, with provisions for expansion and the deployment of Nx100G DIA networks.

  4. Single Subscriber Network: The network architecture ensured no oversubscription on traffic from consortia members back to the internet, providing a dedicated and scalable WAN (Wide Area Network) infrastructure.

  5. Community Anchors: The network fostered partnerships with key community institutions such as colleges, government agencies, and non-profits, enabling enhanced collaboration and access to high-speed internet services.

Impact:

  1. Educational Opportunities: The collaboration between K-12 schools and community colleges facilitated new educational avenues for students, including access to college courses and in-field training on state-of-the-art equipment.

  2. Economic Development: The infrastructure played a pivotal role in attracting new businesses to the region by offering competitive fiber infrastructure rates and facilitating partnerships with local providers.

  3. Digital Equity: By eliminating bandwidth choke points and leveraging private dedicated wireless solutions, the initiative addressed digital equity issues, ensuring rural communities had access to the same benefits as urban areas.

Case Example:

In Oracle, Arizona, the deployment of the infrastructure led to significant improvements in internet connectivity for various community anchors such as fire departments, health clinics, and government agencies. The reduced cost and enhanced performance were highlighted by the Fire District, emphasizing the transformative impact on their operations and community services.

Conclusion:

The case study of the private dedicated infrastructure initiative showcases the transformative power of robust internet connectivity in fostering community empowerment, economic growth, and educational advancement. By leveraging partnerships, scalable technology, and a commitment to digital equity, the project serves as a model for bridging the digital divide and empowering communities for the future.
